How can i lighten my hair without bleach ?

i just tried to die my hair a rich dark burgundy but it ended up just coloring the top half of my hair by the roots and not the ends . i was wondering if there is a way to lighten my hair without bleach so i don't damage it too much but i ca get it lighter so it will take the color better ..please help!
