What advice would you give to a person that is strongly considering a move to New York City?

I am more than likely take a job on monday in New York City working in Broadcast Journalism field. I also considering the move because of the great opportunities in NYC. Let me tell you a little about myself. I am 27 years old male that loves to go out and party, but I am shy and quiet at the same time. I grew up in North Carolina and have a southern accent. I know Queens is a good area to live in but what other areas are good? What advice would you give a person that has never lived in NYC and is considering the move? Will I have a culture shock even though I have lived in big cities before? Can I walk around with a smile without New Yorkers thinking something is wrong with me (I smile a lot by the way).
