I pod issues help !!!!!?

ok im having issues puting songs on my ipod i just got it so im not really sure what to do but ever time i sync to add the songs what i previously had on my ipod gets erased im sure there is a way to add songs with out removing the other ones and i cant find it ive tried looking on apple for help but no luck so someone please help lol
