What books to read before Joyce's Ulysses?

Before I answer this question, I feel that I have to mention that you can understand Ulysses without reading the books it alludes to. You just need a general working knowledge of the story lines of (especially) Hamlet, Iliad and the Odyssey. If you really want to read something before, read the Dubliners and the Bible.
