How can I find out if anyone has ever taken died in a home that I want to purchase?

I don't know if it's the same in every state but, in mine, the purchaser of any piece of real estate has the right to know if anyone has ever ped away in a home they are thinking of buying. I am not working with a realtor so this information has been difficult for me to obtain. I know there has to be a way to get this information from the courthouse or some branch of city gov't, I'm just not sure where to start...
