Why did my first pap smear hurt so bad?

I few days ago I had my first pap smear and (I'm a virgin) and waited until i was 21, but it was so uncomfortable and painful that the doctor pulled out midway because i couldn't take it any longer.How do you girls get through it?Other woman I talk to said it doesn't hurt but, why did it hurt for me?I feel bad now that I couldn't go though it now have to wait until next year.Any advise on how to relax so next year i will be able to go though with it.
